There are many things to Consider Before Rescuing a Dog

Rescuing a dog is a wonderful and rewarding experience, but it’s important to consider several factors before making the commitment. Every rescue dog has a unique background and set of needs, so taking the time to evaluate your situation and the dog’s requirements will help ensure a successful adoption. Please note, most of these points transfer over to getting a puppy too. Puppies are generally harder than adult dogs.

Here are some key points to think about:

1. Your Lifestyle & Commitment

✅ Do you have the time to care for and train a rescue dog?

✅ Are you prepared for the potential challenges of rehoming a dog, such as behavioural issues or anxiety?

✅ Does your work schedule allow enough time to meet the dog’s physical and emotional needs?

✅ Are all family members on board with the responsibility of caring for a new dog?

✅ Do you have the patience to allow the dog to settle at their own pace?

2. The Dog’s Background

✅ Where has the dog come from (stray, shelter, previous home)?

✅ Has the dog had any known trauma or neglect that may impact their behaviour?

✅ How many homes has the dog had before, and why was it surrendered?

✅ Has the dog been assessed for behavioural issues such as resource guarding, fear aggression, or separation anxiety?

✅ What kind of environment did the dog previously live in (busy household, quiet home, rural, urban)?

3. The Dog’s Breed & Energy Levels

✅ Is the breed suited to your home and lifestyle?

✅ Does the dog require a lot of exercise, mental stimulation, or grooming?

✅ Will the dog be happy in your home environment (flat, house with a garden, busy city, countryside)?

✅ Can you meet the dog’s energy needs through daily walks, training, and enrichment?

✅ Are you prepared for breed-specific traits such as herding, guarding, or hunting instincts?

4. Health & Veterinary Needs

✅ Has the dog had a full health check, vaccinations, flea/worm treatment, and microchipping?

✅ Does the dog have any ongoing medical conditions that require treatment or special care?

✅ Are you financially prepared for veterinary costs, including potential emergencies?

✅ Will you need pet insurance, and what will it cover?

✅ Does the dog need to be neutered/spayed, and are you prepared for the recovery process?

5. Training & Behavioural Support

✅ Does the dog know basic commands, or will training be required?

✅ Are you experienced in handling dogs with behavioural issues, or will you need professional support?

✅ How does the dog react to other dogs, people, and new experiences?

✅ Is the dog toilet trained, or will you need to work on house training?

✅ Can you commit to consistent training to help the dog feel safe and secure?

6. Home Environment & Family Dynamics

✅ Do you have other pets, and how will they react to a new dog?

✅ Are there young children in the household, and is the dog child-friendly?

✅ Do you have a secure garden or access to a safe outdoor space?

✅ Are you renting? If so, does your landlord allow pets?

✅ Are there any hazards in your home that may need to be addressed before bringing the dog in?

7. The Adjustment Period

✅ Are you prepared for the “decompression” phase where the dog needs time to settle?

✅ Do you understand that trust-building may take weeks or even months?

✅ Are you ready for potential setbacks, including accidents, chewing, or anxiety-related behaviours?

✅ Can you provide a stable, loving home where the dog feels safe and secure?

✅ Have you set realistic expectations for your dog’s adjustment and progress?

Final Thoughts

Rescuing a dog is a lifelong commitment that requires patience, understanding, and dedication. Taking the time to consider these factors will help ensure that you and your new companion are the perfect match. The journey may have challenges, but with the right preparation, love, and training, your rescue dog will thrive in their new home. 🐶💕
