Basic Training: 10 Minutes a Day

Overview:

This simple yet effective 4-week training plan is designed for busy dog owners who want a well-mannered and responsive companion. With just 10 minutes a day, this plan gradually builds your dog’s basic obedience, impulse control, and communication skills. By the end, your dog will have a strong foundation for being a happy, well-behaved member of the family! 🐕✨

Essentials You’ll Need:

  • Food: Their everyday food

  • Treats: High-value rewards (small and soft are ideal)

  • Clicker or Marker Word: Use a clicker or simply say “Yes!” to mark good behaviour

  • Leash & Harness: For practicing leash walking and impulse control

  • Quiet Space: A distraction-free environment to start with

  • Patience & Consistency: The key to success! 🕒

Week 1: Foundation & Engagement

Goal: Build engagement and establish clear communication 🗣️Start by getting your dog excited to work with you! Use treats to reinforce positive behaviour and create a connection. By the end of Week 1, your dog will understand the concept of rewards, their name, and calm behaviour.

Key Focus:

  • Introduce a marker word (“Yes!”)

  • Build trust by hand-feeding meals

  • Begin name recognition and rewarding calm behaviour

Week 2: Basic Commands & Structure

Goal: Teach essential commands with consistency 👨‍🏫This week, you’ll start laying the groundwork for basic commands like “Sit” and “Down.” Practice regularly with your dog to create strong foundations for obedience.

Key Focus:

  • Teach “Sit” and “Down” using food lures

  • Reinforce patience by having your dog hold commands before meals

Week 3: Door Manners & Impulse Control

Goal: Encourage self-control and polite behaviour 🚪Now it’s time to work on impulse control, especially when it comes to door manners and leash walking. This week, you’ll teach your dog to wait at doors, practice loose-leash walking, and introduce the “Leave It” command.

Key Focus:

  • Teach your dog to wait at doors

  • Practice loose-leash walking and “Sit”/“Stay”

  • Introduce “Leave It” to prevent unwanted behaviour

Week 4: Strengthening Skills & Real-World Practice

Goal: Improve reliability with distractions

🌍As you enter the final week, you’ll start practicing all the skills in real-world environments with distractions.

Your dog will gain confidence and improve in more challenging situations.

Key Focus:

  • Extend “Stay” and add distractions

  • Reinforce recall (“Come”) with short distances

  • Practice everything in a more distracting environment 🏞️

Preparation for Training: Set Yourself Up for Success!

Starting a dog training routine doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. This plan is designed to fit into your busy life, with just 10 minutes a day. The key is consistency, not perfection—by committing to short, manageable sessions, you’ll make noticeable progress with your dog, and the results will make your life much easier.

Why This Training Will Make Life Easier

Training your dog doesn’t just teach them obedience; it creates a stronger bond between you both, reduces behavioural issues, and builds confidence. A well-trained dog is easier to manage in public spaces, at the vet, during walks, and around the house. You’ll enjoy a calmer, more focused companion who listens to your commands, leading to fewer frustrations throughout your day. 🐾💕

When to Do the Training: Fit it Into Your Routine

This plan requires only 10 minutes a day, and the best part is you can do it at any time that fits your schedule. Flexibility is key, and it’s all about making it work for you. Here are some ideal moments to sneak in your quick training sessions:

  • While making your morning coffee ☕: Take those 10 minutes to engage with your dog before your day gets busy.

  • Before your kids wake up ⏰: A peaceful training session to start your day on the right note.

  • While waiting for the kids to finish getting ready 🧒: A great way to spend some quality time with your dog in between tasks.

  • During your lunch break 🍽️: Use a few minutes to practice commands before you dive into your meal.

  • Before your gym class or workout 🏋️‍♀️: A quick session to keep the energy flowing.

  • After work 🧑‍💼: Wind down from your day with some positive bonding time.

  • In the evening, while relaxing 🌙: A perfect way to unwind with your dog after a busy day.

The Power of Flexibility

It’s important to remember that the training doesn’t need to be done at the exact same time every day. Life can get hectic, and that’s okay! Whether it’s in the morning, during lunch, before or after work, or in the evening, just carve out those 10 minutes wherever they fit in. The consistency of doing it daily (even at different times) is what matters most. 🌟

By training in short bursts, you’re not only setting your dog up for success, but you’re also making it easy for yourself to stay on track without feeling stressed about finding long periods of time. It’s all about those small, achievable steps.

Get Ready for a More Enjoyable Life with Your Dog!

Training is an investment that will pay off in many ways. In just 10 minutes a day, you’ll see improvements in your dog’s behaviour, your communication, and your daily routine. The effort you put in will lead to a better relationship and a more well-behaved dog who listens and responds to you.

Consistency, patience, and a little bit of fun go a long way. Ready to get started? You’ve got this! 💪🐕

Final Thoughts:

Consistency is key! With just 10 minutes a day, you’ll establish a strong foundation of obedience and create a positive relationship with your dog. The result? A well-mannered, happy companion who’s ready for any challenge. 💪🐾
