Day 4: Teaching “Sit”
Week 1: Foundations & Communication

Goal:
Teach your dog to sit on command using a food lure, setting the foundation for impulse control and good manners.
What You Need:
Treats (small, soft, and high-value)
A quiet space with minimal distractions
What to Do:
Get Your Dog’s Attention: Hold a treat close to your dog’s nose so they focus on it.
Lure Into Position: Slowly move the treat upward and slightly back over their head. Their natural response will be to follow the treat and lower their back end into a sit.
Mark and Reward: The moment your dog’s bottom touches the ground, say “Yes!” and immediately give them the treat.
Repeat: Practice 10–15 times in short bursts, keeping the session fun and positive.
Tips for Success:
Be Patient: If your dog jumps up instead of sitting, lower the treat more slowly and keep it close to their nose.
No Pushing: Let them figure it out naturally—don’t push their back down.
Keep it Fun: Keep your tone encouraging and reward every successful sit.
Add the Cue: Once your dog sits consistently with the lure, start saying “Sit” just before moving the treat. Over time, they will associate the word with the action.
Why It Works:
Teaching “Sit” is one of the most fundamental obedience skills, helping with calm behaviour, patience, and impulse control. It’s also useful for daily routines like greeting guests or waiting before meals.
End of Day 4:
By the end of today’s session, your dog should be starting to follow the lure into a sit position. With continued practice, they’ll soon understand and respond to the word “Sit” without needing a treat every time.
Great job—keep reinforcing this skill throughout the day! 🐾
Ready for the next step? Let’s keep building on your dog’s foundation! 🐾
