Day 2: Name Recognition

Week 1: Foundations & Communication

28 Day Training: Day 2
28 Day Training: Day 2

Goal:

Teach your dog to recognise and respond to their name, reinforcing the connection between their name and positive rewards.

What You Need:

  • Treats (small, soft, and high-value)

  • A quiet space where your dog can focus and won't be easily distracted

What to Do:

  1. Get Your Dog’s Attention: In a quiet space, say your dog’s name clearly and cheerfully.

  2. Wait for a Response: As soon as your dog looks at you or acknowledges their name (this might take a second or two), immediately say “Yes!” in a positive, upbeat tone.

  3. Reward Immediately: After saying “Yes!”, give your dog a treat. The key is that the treat should follow within 1–2 seconds after they respond to their name.

  4. Repeat: Repeat this process 10–15 times in short, positive bursts. Every time your dog looks at you after hearing their name, say “Yes!” and reward them.

Tips for Success:

  • Consistency is Key: Be consistent with saying your dog’s name in a clear, friendly tone so that they start associating it with something positive.

  • Stay Positive: Keep the mood light and fun. This exercise is meant to be enjoyable for both you and your dog.

  • Timing Reminder: Today’s focus is to help your dog learn that their name is a cue to pay attention and that they will receive a reward for doing so. You don’t need to worry too much about timing in relation to the behaviour yet—just focus on helping your dog connect the name with a positive outcome.

  • Gradual Progress: If your dog doesn’t respond right away, be patient. You can try to gently encourage their attention (like by moving or making a sound) and then reward them when they focus on you.

Why It Works:

This exercise helps your dog associate their name with a positive outcome. Over time, this will build the foundation for better communication, making it easier to get their attention during future training and everyday life.

End of Day 2:

After today’s session, your dog should start to recognise their name as a cue for attention and a reward. You’ll notice they may start looking at you more often when you say their name, which is a great sign!
